Laura has come up with a great challenge for this year.  Here is is : Rainbow challenge:

Dear friends, this year's challenge is a very simple one. Your vision of a rainbow! The only rule is that you must use all 7 colors of the rainbow, as established by Isaac Newton. There are no limitations. You can make 1 block, or 7 blocks. 1 placemat or 7.  A tablerunner or a wall hanging. A baby quilt or a king size quilt. Pieced or appliqued or both. Embellished or not. Anything goes! You can share your journey/progress at the October and November meetings, and/or you can wait to present your finished work at our annual Christmas party.

These are your 7 rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
(Indigo is a color between blue and violet; a dark purplish blue.)

Rainbows are magical! Have fun!   Laura
It will be discussed at the meeting on Tuesday.  Sounds like fun and who doesn't love a rainbow?

Coastal Sewing

In Attendance:
Lois, Susan, Arleen, Karen, Ann, Wanda, Joyce, Didi and Dianne.  We had one guest, July Mundhenk, welcome Judy, we hope you come back and join us again!

We displayed our aqua squares, and Wanda won them.

Dianne handed out the squares for next month, we should use beige or khaki and Navy for the other colors.

Either I didn’t write it down, or no one volunteered to bring strips for next month.

Treasurer’s report.  We have $243.48 in our treasury.

Lois also mentioned going to a community event where she, Penny and Arleen met the organizers and learned about a sewing class for kids at the community college this summer.  We voted to authorize her to donate up to $140 toward a scholarship for 1 student to attend.  The community organizer can choose the candidate.  We ask that s/he provide a picture of them self with their project.

Magazine challenge: 6 quilts were submitted for the challenge.  Some of the comments were: I could do what I wanted; opened her mind to possibilities, no rules.

Rip and tear bags challenge: the bags were great, different shapes and sizes and filled with toiletries.  They were donated to the domestic violence shelter.  The extra notions were donated to the Sister Isaac Center.  Ann also donated a quilt she made, and Penny quilted to Sister Isaac.

For next month, the challenge was presented by Dianne.  Various fabrics were available for dual challengers.  Pair of quilters were challenged to make a table topper or some other quilted project with their chosen fabric and any other fabric they want.  Next month we will look at how each person used their fabric in a design of their choosing.

It was decided that next month (May 2) we will meet at New York Deli (by Apple Annie’s) at 12 noon for lunch before our monthly meeting.  This is an optional event.

The May meeting will have a program by Pam

Cape Fear Modern Quilting Guild Meeting Notes:
March 7, 2017
Dianne Brisson
Lois “won” the completed salmon/white/batik squares, I think she got 9 or 10.  That’s great.
A few more blue squares came in for Pam.  Dianne will bring in strips for next month.  Looking forward to seeing some completed quilts soon!

Teal strips were distributed, we decided to use a light gray and 1 other batik for our 12 ½“ squares.

We had a new member join us this month: Susan Wilson.  Welcome.

Election of officers will be coming up in a few months. Think about filling one of the following positions: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and communications for a year.

Karen got the date mixed up for the newsprint challenge.  But it was good so we all got to see what her interpretation was.  Gave the rest of us some courage.  The challenge is due next month.

The rip it and rip it again challenge started this month too.  Those that participated ended up with several strips of fabric of varying width.  Make a pouch of your choice and fill it with small toiletries to donate.  This challenge is also due next month.

Show and Tell was fun, several people brought in their projects.  Especially liked Terrific T shirt quilt by Lorelei and Laura’s quilt from mis-matched squares.

Next month will start another challenge.  I will bring in enough fabric for several 2 person
swaps.  No prep by the members will be needed!

Next Meeting: April 4, 2017 1:30 p.m. Coastal Sewing

Meeting Minutes Feb 7,2017

Cape Fear Modern Quilting Guild
Minutes February 7, 2017

In attendance: Ann Boggs, Joyce Bardeen, Lois Khakee, Karen Smith, Arleen Morrissey, Molly Bigelow, Pam Morris, Wanda Duchesne, Laura Leonard, Didi Nilson Taylor, and Dianne Brisson.

Meeting called to order by Joyce.

The first thing we talked about was the “Kindness” squares that were made using the strips that were provided by Arleen.  We got 9 with one being promised for next month.  Pam won the drawing and will work on assembling her quilt.

Joyce brought new “salmon” colored strips.  It was decided that we use white again as a background color and that 1 or 2 batiks can also be used in a 12 ½” block.

As a group, we also decided that the group would pay for batting and backing if reimbursement was requested.

The treasurer’s reported that we have $238.48 in our treasury.

The discussion was continued this month regarding the location for future meetings.  We took a vote and decided to move our meeting location to Coastal Sewing and Appliance store located at the Crossroads Center at 894 S. Kerr Avenue 5B in Wilmington.   Everyone also agreed that the afternoon time frame and 1st Tuesday of the month would work well for us.

We will need to find a new instructor for the class on “Taking care of your sewing machine” for October, several suggestions were made and we will look into them in the near future.

Don’t forger “Open Sew” at the Senior Center located at South College and Shipyard.  We meet in the Craft Room every Thursday at 9:30 in the morning until about noon.  Knitters and crocheters are also welcome.  They even have a sewing machine that you can use.

Magazine Challenge.  We looked at the magazine pages that Parker sent in.  As a group, we decided that creating something from an idea was better than out of nothing so each participant picked a page, and shared it with others that expressed an interest and we could each interpret it in our own way.  No limits were set for size, but it should be a finished product with binding or some other finished edge.  Challenges will be due at the April meeting.  This one could get interesting! Looking forward to the results and seeing how everyone interprets their page.

March project fabric requirements for each participant: ½ yard of quilt shop quality fabric.  NO BATIK for this project.  More details to follow at the meeting!
